Self-Reflection

Being a student of Communication and Media Studies has taught me that communication is connected to how people understand the world, build relationships, and respond to information. It is not just about speaking or writing, but about understanding audiences, interpreting the meaning of something, and understanding how power media messages can truly be. Throughout my coursework, I have learned how communication shapes perception in everyday life, from interpersonal interactions to large scale narratives. This has made me more mindful of how I express my ideas and interpret the ideas and messages from others. It has strengthened my ability to think critically, organize information more clearly, and consider the impact on the audience in all forms of communication.

My concentration is in Media Studies which focuses on how storytelling, digital platforms, and much more shape communication. Some of the courses I’ve taken include Sports Media, Conflict Communication, Intimate Relationships and Media, Health Communication, and Intro to Public Relations. Throughout my studies, I learned about media effects, audience interpretation, strategic messaging, and how social media shapes the public. I used critical and social scientific perspectives, using theories and research to evaluate how media influences audiences and reflects cultural and social dynamics.

After graduation, I am interested in a career in sports media, public relations, social media, or media relations. I am specifically interested in jobs that use storytelling, digital engagement, or shaping how sports organizations communicate with their audiences. My internship with the Milwaukee Brewers has played a major role in strengthening this interest and has given me real-world insight into how media and communication is used on the inside of the sports world.

Outside the classroom, I have been able to build hands-on experiences that have strengthened my understand of media in a different way. My experience in athletics, coaching, and working with teams has helped me develop strong communication, leadership, and adaptability skills. These experiences have allowed me to take what I have learned in the classroom and apply it to everyday life.
